Brentwood's football team carries a 7-1 record and a four-game Region 6-6A winning streak into a Friday, Oct. 23, home matchup against Independence.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Brentwood. The Bruins are 4-0 in league play after a dominant stretch. That run included a 55-0 rout of Coffee County High School on Oct. 2. Brentwood followed with a 23-3 road win at Franklin High School on Oct. 8, according to the Williamson Herald.
The Bruins enter off a bye week.
Their defense held Franklin to just 70 yards of total offense in the Oct. 8 win. Quarterback Gavin Strang threw for 290 yards and two touchdowns in that game. Jones Merrill hauled in seven catches for 106 yards and a score, while Parker Cates caught six passes for 70 yards and a touchdown and added 42 rushing yards and another score.
"It wasn't the prettiest game of the year, but they battled all night," Brentwood coach Clint Finch told the Williamson Herald after the Franklin win.
Independence, based in Thompson's Station, arrives at 3-5 overall and 3-1 in Region 6-6A, according to MaxPreps. The Eagles have lost two straight, including a 63-28 defeat to Ravenwood High School on Oct. 2 and a 7-3 loss to Fred J Page High School on Oct. 8. Independence managed 347 yards of offense in the Page loss but turned the ball over five times, the Herald reported.
The stakes extend beyond Oct. 23. A Brentwood win would set up an unbeaten region run heading into the Oct. 30 Battle of the Wood against Ravenwood, as we reported Oct. 15. The Raptors sit at 5-2 overall and 3-0 in district play, per MaxPreps, and are on a four-game winning streak.
Both Brentwood and Ravenwood cracked the On3 Massey Ratings Tennessee Top 25 as of Oct. 11. Brentwood ranked No. 18 and Ravenwood No. 15.
The Herald reported that Ravenwood could secure a region championship berth if the Raptors reach the Battle of the Wood without a league loss.
The Battle of the Wood follows Friday, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m. at Brentwood.
