Brentwood quarterback Gavin Strang earned Gateway Tire Athlete of the Week honors after throwing four touchdowns in a 55-0 shutout of Coffee County on Friday, Oct. 2.
The 6-foot-5 junior completed 12 of 15 passes for 153 yards in the home rout, which pushed the Bruins to 3-0 in Region 6-6A at the time, as the Williamson Herald reported.
Strang kept rolling in his next start. He completed 26 of 34 passes for 290 yards and two touchdowns Thursday, Oct. 8, as Brentwood beat Franklin 23-3 to improve to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in region play. Parker Cates and Jones Merrill each scored receiving touchdowns in the win, which extended Brentwood's series streak over Franklin to 11 games.
The efficiency is nothing new. In a 35-0 non-region shutout of Henry County on Sept. 25, Strang went 20-for-24 for 341 yards and two touchdowns. He opened region play Sept. 5 against Summit with an 11-for-14, 215-yard, three-touchdown performance in a 34-0 win.
Three shutouts in four region games.
Strang transferred to Brentwood from Lausanne Collegiate School in Memphis ahead of the 2025 season under the TSSAA one-time transfer rule. In the Williamson Herald's Oct. 9 recap of the Franklin game, he said his reads have sharpened. "I was forcing too much … I've done a better job of keeping the ball on our side and not turning it over," Strang said, comparing his play to last season.
Head coach Clint Finch told the Williamson Herald on Oct. 9 that Independence's quarterback and receiving corps will test Brentwood's defense when the Bruins return from their bye week.
Brentwood hosts Independence on Friday, Oct. 23, at James C. Parker Stadium with kickoff set for 7 p.m. Strang is scheduled to appear on the WillCo Sports Power Hour on Monday, Oct. 19, at Fozzy's in Franklin. The weekly award is sponsored by Garth Bouldin of Gateway Tire & Service Center in Franklin.
