Brentwood erased an eight-point first-set deficit and swept Ravenwood 30-28, 25-23, 25-21 on Senior Night in the District 10-AAA Battle of the Woods on Thursday, Sept. 24.
Senior Avery Burdette led the Bruins with five aces and 10 kills. Sela Baldwin added a team-high 11 kills, and sophomore Laurel McElrath finished with nine, as first reported by the Williamson Herald.
The win moved Brentwood to 11-15 overall and 5-6 in district play. Ravenwood dropped to 11-15 and 2-9 in the district.
Before the match, Brentwood honored four seniors: Burdette, Celia Wilson, Lauren Miller and Piper Kelton.
"Ravenwood definitely has pushed us this season and has found our weak part, so it was really cool to be down in the first set by eight points and then finish," Burdette said.
The Raptors jumped out to an early lead in the opener. Sophomore Ryan Davis's kill gave Ravenwood an 8-2 lead, and junior Emma Perdzock stretched it to 14-6. Brentwood answered with a 13-5 run, pulling within 19-17 on an ace from freshman Chase Bellanca. The teams traded leads through five extra set points before McElrath's kill and a Ravenwood hit out of bounds sealed the set for the Bruins.
Ravenwood coach Cole Davis said the extended first set took a toll. He called it "definitely one of the hardest sets I think we've played so far" and said it affected his team mentally in the second.
In that second set, Ravenwood grabbed a brief 16-15 lead on a kill by sophomore Emmalin Klein. Miller answered with three consecutive aces to put Brentwood back in front for good.
The Bruins controlled the third set early, building a 9-3 lead and stretching it to 15-8 after back-to-back aces from Burdette. Ravenwood closed within 21-18 but could not complete the comeback.
Brentwood combined for 15 aces in the match. Burdette's five led all players, with freshman Kylie Madsen and Miller contributing three each.
Perdzock and Klein paced Ravenwood with eight kills apiece.
Davis, the Ravenwood coach, pointed to growth that the scoreboard does not show. He said his young squad has pushed through and made changes throughout the season.
Brentwood traveled to Centennial on Friday, Sept. 25, according to the BHS Athletic Department on X. Ravenwood was also scheduled to play Friday, Sept. 25.
