Brentwood High School's volleyball team begins its District 10-AAA tournament run Saturday, Oct. 3, with JV play, followed by the varsity bracket Monday, Oct. 5, through Thursday, Oct. 8.
The Lady Bruins closed the regular-season home schedule with a 3-0 sweep of rival Ravenwood on Sept. 23 at Brentwood High School. That senior night win put head coach Sarah Rucker's squad at 11-15 overall and 5-6 in district play as of Sept. 23. Results from later regular-season matches were not available.
Brentwood trailed 8-2 in the first set against the Raptors before rallying to win 30-28 in extra points. The Bruins took the next two sets 25-23 and 25-21, according to the Williamson Herald.
Junior Sela Baldwin led the attack with 11 kills. Senior Avery Burdette added 10 kills and five aces, and sophomore Laurel McElrath tallied nine kills.
"Ravenwood definitely has pushed us this season and has found our weak part, so it was really cool to be down in the first set by eight points and then finish," Burdette said after the match.
Burdette is one of four seniors honored that night alongside Celia Wilson, Lauren Miller and Piper Kelton. The senior class anchors a roster Rucker rebuilt after losing eight players from back-to-back state championship game appearances. Six of those graduates now play college volleyball.
Rucker told the Williamson Herald in August that the district would test her young group all season. She called District 10-AAA home to "some of the best talent in the state of Tennessee" and said her team would need to "stay healthy and mentally prepared to have these dog fights of a match."
The district has produced the last two Class AAA state champions. Nolensville won the title in 2024, and Summit claimed it in 2025, beating Brentwood both years.
Baldwin and McElrath, the underclassmen Rucker counted on to replace graduated firepower, have stepped up. Burdette praised both after the Ravenwood win, saying McElrath "has a big, heavy arm, especially on the right side" and that Baldwin "has no fear when she comes up."
Freshman Kylie Madsen also contributed three aces against Ravenwood, part of a 15-ace team effort.
A district tournament win would send Brentwood to the regional tournament Tuesday, Oct. 13, with the substate round Thursday, Oct. 15, and the state tournament beginning Tuesday, Oct. 20, according to the team's schedule.
