Ravenwood's girls soccer team erased a first-half deficit and beat Independence 2-1 on Wednesday, Oct. 7, in Brentwood to advance in the District 10-AAA tournament.
The fourth-seeded Raptors trailed 1-0 at halftime after Independence senior Bella Necci lobbed a right-footed kick into the box in the 14th minute, just out of reach of Ravenwood junior goalkeeper Page Casey. The lead held through the break despite a one-on-one chance for Ravenwood junior Tatum Hartshorn in the 34th minute, stopped by Independence keeper Caroline Brown.
Junior Callie Karkau changed the game in the 47th minute. She blasted a shot from outside the 18-yard box that deflected off Brown's hands and into the net.
"I had time. I saw that the defender was backing off of me, so I had the opportunity to take a shot. I just steadied myself and let it go," Karkau told the Williamson Herald.
The comeback was on.
Bentley Briggs sealed it in the 75th minute, firing in a rebound inside the box after Brown made an initial save.
"I was just thinking to myself, I have to follow this ball because it's not going out," Briggs said. "I have a chance of putting it in if the goalie drops it."
Ravenwood Athletics named Karkau player of the match on X. Head coach Liz Kappler said the rally reflected her team's identity, noting the Raptors showed who they are by the way they finished the game.
The win moves Ravenwood to 9-2 on the season. Independence ended its year at 5-7-3.
The Raptors face second-seeded Page in the district semifinals Friday, Oct. 9, in Rudderville. Page, the tournament host, rolled past Centennial 4-0 in its quarterfinal and beat Ravenwood 2-1 in their regular-season meeting.
In the other District 10-AAA quarterfinals Wednesday, top-seeded Franklin routed Nolensville 9-0 and Summit blanked Brentwood 9-0. Franklin and Summit meet in the other semifinal Friday.
Kickoff times for Friday's semifinals have not been confirmed. The Williamson Herald reported a 5 p.m. start, while the Ravenwood Athletics account posted 7 p.m.
